The mission of the Complementary and Integrative Medicine Program is to increase self-reliance of the patient in controlling and managing his/her health through a merging of traditional western and complementary approaches; delivered in a holistic (meaning mind, body, spirit) and interdisciplinary manner. It is the goal of the program to promote the safe and supervised use of complementary medicine as an adjunct to the patient’s current regimen, and to assist the patient in making the transition from an “illness model” of behavior to that of a “wellness model.” By achieving these goals, we empower the patient in making necessary life-style changes.
The purpose of the complementary medicine program is to provide an interdisciplinary approach to manage and improve health by: Using mind-body-spirit approaches; Providing quality patient education; Decreasing dependence on medication and decreasing polypharmacy, where this is desirable, especially to medications with abuse potential; Improving the patient’s overall health and documenting these improvements with valid outcome indicators.

THERAPIES
Acupuncture - A therapy that consists of stimulating designated points on the skin by the insertion of needles, application of heat, finger pressure or a combination of these. This treatment balances body energy which in turn adjusts blood flow, nervous tone, hormone level and the functions of internal organs; giving relief from pain, stress, allergies and enhancing the immune system by the elevation of endorphin levels.
Chiropractic - Chiropractic treatment is used for acute and chronic pain management. It can help people who have back pain, neck pain, sciatica, headaches, arthritis pain, whiplash, and carpal tunnel symptoms.
Hypnotherapy - Hypnosis is a well-known method used to help patients reach their goals effectively and permanently. Used for smoking cessation, weight management, stress management and pain management, this therapy guides the patient into total relaxation where focus can be placed on handling the above-mentioned issues. All sessions are private and provided by a certified Hypnotherapist.
Osteopathic Manipulation Therapy - This therapy is a different form of medical treatment that utilizes the holistic approach to correct misalignments of the spine and/or extremities. These adjustments can relieve pain or correct a medical problem by releasing nerve impingement and improving the blood supply to organs or extremities.
Reiki - A practice of transmitting healing energy through the hands, this modality is practiced in every country. It cleanses the body of toxins, promotes relaxation and balance, and accelerates the body’s natural healing process working on causal levels of disease. It is not based on belief, faith or suggestion. It is safe for children and pregnant women.
NATURAL APPROACH
Natural Pharmacy - Medicines, while necessary and beneficial, can interfere with the absorption of nutrients from one’s diet. Additionally, a number of chronic diseases can be more effectively managed with the judicious and careful use of nutritional and herbal supplements. We are committed to improving health with the safe and effective use of quality supplements, so we offer a wide range of these products in our Natural Pharmacy. Patients interested in beginning a nutritional or herbal approach to addressing health concerns should consult with our pharmacologist, Linda Spanos, PhD.
Nutritional/Herbal Approaches to Health - This treatment offers a health assessment to determine the severity of symptoms to be corrected by a nutritional approach. Recommendations regarding medications, diet and supplements are presented, with follow-up appointments to monitor progress.
EXERCISE
Aerobics & Spinning® - In aerobics the focus is on your routine, the ‘here and now,’ while Spinning® is performed on a stationery bicycle while listening to creative dialogue as you go on an imaginary journey for an ‘over-the-road’ experience. Both of these forms of cardiovascular exercise improve circulation and reduce stress.
Yoga - This form of exercise exemplifies the “whole-person” approach. It creates peace and harmony in mind, body and spirit. Not religious-based, it helps the patient achieve a sense of physical and mental well-being. It makes the body stronger, more flexible and improves circulation. It also provides energy, stress reduction and lowers blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar levels. It is safe during pregnancy.
