Rural Health Celebrations | 2025

During Rural Health Week in Pennsylvania (November 17–21, 2025) and on National Rural Health Day (November 20), we want to share how we are making an impact in removing barriers to care in our communities.

What PHN is Doing to Recognize National Rural Health Day

This year to recognize National Rural Health Day, we asked our CEO, Dr. George Garrow, what we are doing to provide optimal care to our rural patients throughout Pennsylvania and Ohio!

Our challenges in rural healthcare

“Our patients in rural communities may face challenges accessing healthcare due to a provider shortage, the downsizing or closure of local community hospitals, and limited availability of specialty services. Additionally, challenges like the lack of broadband internet and cellular service, as well as limited transportation resources, further complicate access to necessary care.” – Dr. George Garrow

Bringing Health Services to Rural Pennsylvania

Our Mobile Health Unit brings important medical services like primary care, screenings, vaccinations, and preventive care straight to people and families who might not get them otherwise. By visiting communities with limited healthcare options, the Mobile Health Unit helps solve one of rural health’s biggest problems: transportation.

“Access shouldn’t depend on where you live,” said Dr. George Garrow, CEO of Primary Health Network. “Our Mobile Health Unit is a lifeline for patients who face distance, mobility, or economic barriers. It brings care, compassion, and connection to people right where they are.”

With this program, we work with housing authorities, senior centers, churches, and local agencies to meet patients in places they know and trust. The program also helps us find out about health issues and other factors that affect people’s well-being, so we can support overall wellness in rural Pennsylvania.

This mobile approach has already made a real difference in communities. In Emlenton, for example, we first offered temporary services with the Mobile Health Unit before opening a permanent health center. Now, people have ongoing access to primary care and free transportation.

Strengthening Rural Health Services

We’re also working to improve rural healthcare by investing in new equipment and facilities. Thanks to recent funding, we added Compact Wheelchair Recliners at our Rochester Dental Center and in our Mobile Dental Unit. These upgrades make visits more comfortable and accessible for patients with disabilities and help our staff work more efficiently.

Honoring Our Rural Communities

National Rural Health Day was created to honor rural health professionals and the creative ways they serve communities with fewer resources. Every day, PHN works to fulfill this mission by focusing on care and community.

“PHN’s investment in rural communities shows what’s possible when we come together to support one another and create opportunity,” Dr. Garrow added. “The passion and resilience of rural communities continue to inspire us as we work to improve health outcomes across the regions we serve.”
