Goose Day Celebration | Dr. George C. Gander

On September 29, 2023, Primary Health Network, in partnership with its charitable arm, the PHN Charitable Foundation, joyfully commemorated Goose Day, a cherished Juniata River Valley tradition that has persevered for over two centuries. According to local folklore, partaking in a meal of goose on September 29th bestows one with financial abundance throughout the entire year.

In keeping with this tradition, the town has woven another enchanting tale, suggesting that new geese have chosen the Mifflin County region as their migratory destination. However, these geese are not the conventional waterfowl that grace our state’s bodies of water. They stand at an impressive nearly five feet in height, each adorned with a captivating array of colors and designs.

The “Flock Together” public art initiative has united our town’s gifted artists with local businesses, giving rise to a splendid collection of uniquely personalized goose statues. Primary Health Network unveiled their goose statue on September 29th. The event saw a distinguished gathering of attendees, including PHN leadership, board members, and dedicated health center staff and providers.

A heartfelt thank you extends to members of the PHN Charitable Foundation staff, who played a pivotal role in orchestrating the design of Primary Health Network’s own majestic goose. As an added touch of community involvement, an internal naming contest was held across the Primary Health Network, with the winning entry being “Dr. George C. Gander,” submitted by Dr. Timothy Geotz of Beaver Falls Primary Care.

Dr. George C. Gander now stands as a proud sentinel at the entrance of our Lewistown Community Health Center, extending a warm welcome to all who step inside our facility. We cordially invite our community to pay a visit to our iconic goose and extend the spirit of the Goose Day celebration throughout the entire year.
